Leash Training A Dog

When bringing a new puppy home, follow these tips on leash training a dog. Keep your puppy in your sight for a few days. When you can't be with him, have a safe place for him to go. This will help you to find your pet's trouble spots and teach him the house rules.

If you want to train a new puppy to walk on a leash, the first step is to put a collar on the young puppy while you are playing with him. Having the puppy get comfortable wearing the collar is important not only so that you can properly use a leash but also that your puppy has the proper identification tags in case he or she takes off.

If your dog barks and growls at strangers in your home, do this: leash your dog, make him sit, wait until his attention is on you, and hand the leash, in full view of the dog, to your guest. Then wait until the dog is calm again, the guest giving commands as needed. This teaches the dog that your guest ranks above him in "the pack" and he must accept them. When the dog starts to react again, repeat the exercise.

You should train your dog to walk properly on his leash. This will ensure both his safety and yours when you take him on walks. Your dog should know not to pull on the leash and to always heel at your side, which will help keep him out of harm's way, especially in areas with large amounts of traffic or other dangers.

The type of leash, collar, and harness are very important to take into consideration when training a dog. The bigger the dog the more secure these items will need to be. Also if one has a dog that pulls on the leash a harness should be used to control the animal opposed to a choke chain or collar. The right equipment is essential to dog training.

Have the right equipment and use it properly. Learn how to put on a chain or nylon slip collar and use a standard 6 foot leash for most training. Do not yank or pull on the leash. Just give a quick tug and release when the dog ignores a command to come or heel. Soon just wearing the collar will be enough to remind the dog that you are the one in charge of the training session, and very few corrections should be needed.

When it is time to leash train your new dog or puppy, you must let him know that you are boss. Punishment does nothing but make him afraid of you and it doesn't actually correct the behavior. One thing that you should do, is make a short leash so that he has to stay right by your side. Do not let him lead you. You are the leader, not him.

The walk can be very hard to master, but with the right practice and patience, your dog will be walking right by your side in no time. Firstly, do not allow them to leave the door first. When you put his leash on, make him sit first or give you his paw. In short, some sort of obedience to get him in the spirit. Then, when you are actually outside, if he begins to walk in front of you, give the leash a quick tug to assert yourself as the one in charge.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is that you will want to keep the leash with little to no slack in it.  This is important so that your dog does not pull against the leash and try to run uncontrollably when walking it.  It is important to ensure that your dog knows to stay by your side.

Once a person has figured out how to bring out the dogs abilities to learn and be trained it is simply a matter of practicing those techniques. The dog will enjoy pleasing the owner as much as the owner enjoys seeing the dog responding to the training they are administering.
